Infection with hepatitis C virus (HCV) is the most common blood-borne infection in the United States and the leading cause of death from liver disease. Although treatment has improved greatly over the past 5 years with the use of antiviral combination therapy (peginterferon plus ribavirin), diagnosis remains elusive and inconsistent in the absence of HCV-specific blood screening.
